Book Description The year is 1937. On a remote hilltop some distance from
Vienna stands a hotel called The Retreat. Founded by a man who is determined to
cleanse himself and his guests of all "Jewish traits," it is a resort of
assimilation, with daily activities that include lessons in how to look, talk,
act--in short, how to pass--as a gentile. But with Hitler on the march, the
possibilities of both assimilation and retreat are quickly fading for the
hotel's patrons, men and women who are necessarily--and horrifically--blind to
their fate. Mordant, shrewd, and elegantly written, The Retreat is a moving
story of people forbidden to retreat from themselves, by the writer whom Irving
Howe called "one of the best novelists alive."--This text refers to the

From Publishers Weekly A young girl's experience of the Nazi pogrom in her
Polish hometown is related with an immediacy undimmed by time in her
autobiography. In 1942, the author and her family undergo a brutal separation.
Thirteen-year-old Alicia escapes her captors, fleeing through fields and woods,
encountering fellow refugees and occasionally finding safe harbors. Although she
sees her mother's wanton murder and endures physical and mental deprivation, the
teenager is supported by faith in family and in the goodness of people. Capable
of rallying others, she eventually heads a group who settle in Palestine. In
1949, she marries an American in Haifa and moves to the United States. Long and
on occasion rambling, her story contributes to an infamous history as a tale,
not only of survival, but of active resistance to oppression. Major ad/promo.
Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal A Polish
Jew, the author re-creates her efforts to survive in Nazi-dominated, war-torn
Poland. Between the ages of ten and 15, she suffered terrible hardships and
encountered numerous brushes with death. This is a potentially useful addition
to Holocaust literature, for although she never experienced the death camps,
Appleman-Jurman lived in constant peril and managed to survive only through an
extraordinary combination of luck and street sense. Unfortunately, the heavy use
of dialogue reconstructed more than 40 years later has an unsettling effect on
the mood and plausibility of this interesting and frequently horrifying survival
narrative. Still, public libraries should consider. Mark R. Yerburgh, Trinity

From School Library Journal YA --Storytelling has been a part of Jewish
tradition for over five millenia, and this collection represents the great
wealth of diversity of places, cultures, and experiences within the vast
geological and time variations of the Diaspora's history and the period prior to
Jewish written history. Included are not only the major figures of Jewish
history from the Maccabees to modern day heroes of the Holocaust, but also the
wisdom of the Jewish spiritual leaders. For storytelling by students and
teachers and for general reading by all, this book is unsurpassed, for it
represents the best of centuries of tried and perfected stories of masters. -

From Library Journal Bell has selected over 50 articles on topics common and
uncommon, social and spiritual from the popular "Parenting" column she edits for
Hadassah magazine. Ranging widely, she discusses such diverse issues as deciding
on having a bris for your newborn son, celebrating the birth of a daughter,
celebrating bar and bat mitzvas, choosing a college, grandparenting, caring for
aging parents, dealing with a parent's death, teaching Judaism in the home,
creating an appropriate Sabbath environment, facing the "December dilemma," and
teaching children Jewish civil responsibility. While all the articles are sound,
thought-provoking, and ultimately practical, some are especially memorable: Blue
Greenberg's "The Joys of a Large Family," Jack Reimer's "Ethical Wills," and
Daniel Symes's "Preventing Teenage Suicide." What a strong and joyous
celebration of the Jewish family--Orthodox, Reform, or Conservative--in America
today! Highly recommended. - Marcia G. Fuchs, Guilford Free Lib., Ct. Copyright

From Library Journal This photo essay of 60 Jewish American women of all ages
and backgrounds--wealthy, on welfare, orthodox, assimilated, in prison, in
banking, in government--forms a tapestry of connections among a most diverse
group. Those interviewed include a veterinarian in Montgomery, Alabama, the
granddaughter of a black Jewish slave in New York, a Holocaust survivor and her
daughter, and a Jew by choice. The authors show how these women balance two
competing forces--change and tradition--as they combine feminism with Judaism.
Irrespective of their wide cultural, religious, and social differences, they all
express an involvement in collective Jewish conscience while at the same time
showing that Judaism is not a monolithic structure. The fine photos and
evocative text provide an "invisible thread" of its own. Of value to general and
special collections. - Molly Abramowitz, Silver Spring, Md. Copyright 1990 Reed

From Publishers Weekly Booker, a Philadelphia-based journalist, has done a
marvelous demoliton job on the tired stereotypes of the Jewish American
Princess, the guilt-producing Jewish mother, the "over-intellectual, arrogant,
dependent" Jewish male, etc. She argues that calm acceptance of such stereotypes
by Jews who are uneasy about their ethnic identity and who crave the majority's
acceptance insidiously perpetrates anti-Semitism. In the author's damning
analysis, Joan Rivers exudes Jewish self-contempt, Phil Donahue subtly
reinforces anti-Jewish stereotypes and Woody Allen exploits roles that "feed . .
. what people need to believe about Jewish men." This compelling, often
explosive psychohistory of Jewish self-hatred assesses Hannnah Arendt's
obtuseness in the face of Nazi evil, I. F. Stone's hatred of Israel, Lillian
Hellman's consistently negative images of Jews and the bias of feminists who
single out Judaism for its reputed inherent sexism. Copyright 1991 Reed Business

Paperback Crossing Pr
From Publishers Weekly This outgrowth of an issue, edited by Brod, of
Changing Men magazine, provides a forum for a seminal and provocative, if not
comprehensive, collection by male and female authors, rabbis and committed
secularists, that explores the Jewish man within a contemporary feminist
context. In his sparkling contribution, Larry Bush courageously probes his
feelings about homosexuals upon his discovery that a gay writer shares the same
byline; and Ms. editor Pogrebin perceptively attempts to reconcile her mythic
perfect father with his actual counterparta selfish, aloof patriarch who
personified Judaism in her eyes. If Barbara Gottfried's examination of Philip
Roth's male protagonists is academic, Zalman Schachter-Shalomi's treatment of
circumcision, sappy, and Andrea Dworkin's discussion of the sexual mythology of
anti-Semitism, rambling and insufficiently substantiated (she asserts that
Israel was "very largely influenced in its formation by men who came from a
population some of which had been castrated by the Nazis"), there is also much
that is welcome and refreshing here. Particularly noteworthy are essays that

From School Library Journal Grade 2-4 A story that demonstrates that
sometimes good things can come from bad. Aviva, a recent immigrant to Israel
from Argentina, lives with her parents on a kibbutz near the Lebanese border.
Chaikin's brief story describes, in short sentences and simple language, the
arrival of Aviva's piano from Argentina. The child is saddened because the piano
will not fit through the door or window of her family's home. However, after a
bombing raid, a large hole opportunely appears in the wall. Abolafia's many
familiar cartoon drawings highlighted in green and orange bring to life Aviva's
surroundings. Although the story is not one of Chaikin's best, it does provide a
good description of a child's life on a kibbutz. Susan Scheps, Bertram Woods

From School Library Journal Grade 3-5 This retelling of the Old Testament
story of Esther is presented in a beautifully designed book. The text is printed
in a calligraphy style which is both decorative and easy to read. The soft
pencil line drawings supplement the text and are in keeping with the Biblical
theme. Esther, the young Jewish girl chosen to be the wife of the Persian King
Ahasuerus, thwarted the schemes of the king's wicked chief minister to kill all
the Jews of Persia. The event is celebrated to this day by the holiday of Purim.
The story is told in a simple, direct style and has all of the elements of an
absorbing tale: a villain; a beautiful heroine; and a hero, Esther's Uncle
Mordecai. A good addition to the Bible stories section of any library. Ruth

From School Library Journal Grade 5-8-- Chaikin succeeds admirably both in
covering the whole range of Jewish symbols and in presenting their underlying
ideas with clarity and succinctness, distilling the scholarship (attested to by
seven pages of notes and two pages of reference books) into a form easily
comprehended by the intended audience. There have been other books about Jewish
symbols, but none are of this scope and calibre. The book is divided into nine
chapters, each dealing with an aspect of Judaism and/or Jewish culture and the
concepts and symbols associated with it. The narrative, while conversational in
tone, is interwoven with references from the Bible, Talmud, Midrash, folklore,
and history. Weihs's attractive black-and-white scratchboard illustrations have
movement and drama, but contain errors; only one candle is lit on the Sabbath,
and the priestly blessing lacks the correct placing of the fingers. In spite of
these pictorial mistakes, this is a unique book that will be of use in general
collections. --Marcia Posner, Federation of New York and the Jewish Book

Paperback Little, Brown
From School Library Journal Grade 3-5?The prolific writer of juvenile sports
fiction takes a crack at nonfiction. He describes nine dramatic moments from
baseball's historical past, featuring the likes of Babe Ruth, Ted Williams,
Reggie Jackson, and Jim Abbott. These accounts depict the courageous aspects as
well as the spectacular, including Dave Dravecky's comeback after cancer
surgery, and the hobbled Kirk Gibson's game-winning home run in the 1988 World
Series. Christopher tends to drift to his fictional roots as a number of the
stories are laced with manufactured feelings, thoughts, and quotes. He also
tends to generalize: "As the crowd in Fenway Park watched Ted Williams run off
the field for the last time, they told each other, 'There goes the greatest
hitter that ever lived.' " While his portrayals of these moments are basically
accurate, the sidelights he adds without documentation have him walking a fine
line between fact and fiction. While Christopher's legions of young fans will
enjoy the book, a more straightforward account of memorable events in America's
pastime can be found in Geoffrey Ward's 25 Great Moments in Baseball (Knopf,
1994), which is based on Ken Burns's public-television series, Baseball, the
American Epic.?Tom S. Hurlburt, La Crosse Public Library, WI Copyright 1996 Reed

From Publishers Weekly A Lithuanian "Litvak" has reservations about the story
that the local town's rabbi raises himself to heaven during the Jewish new year.
He hides under the rabbi's bed and recites chapters from the Bible to stay
awake. When the rabbi rises from his bed and dons peasant's garb, the Litvak
follows him through town in the shadows cast by houses to the forest beyond. The
rabbi chops down a tree and carries a bundle of sticks and logs to a poor
woman's hut, feigning a business transaction. This is a gentle story of treading
the path of doubt that leads to faithseeing is but one way to believe. The
retelling of this edifying tale from the Hasidic tradition will appeal to young
readers; Ivanov's watercolors are dominated by optimistic shades of yellow and
green and the happy expressions on the faces of well-contented village folk.
Ages 5-9. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc. From School Library
Journal Grade 2-4 Based on a Hassidic tale told by I. L. Peretz, Cohen's
adaptation is a warm tale full of mystery and reverence. The villagers of
Nemirov believe their Rabbi to be so Holy that he raises himself up to Heaven,
and appeals directly to God to seek forgiveness for his people. The doubting
Litvak follows the Rabbi on his secret mission. When he discovers that the Rabbi
is actually engaged in acts of charity, he realizes that there are indeed ways
of raising oneself up to Heaven. From then on he is the Rabbi's most devoted
follower, and when the townspeople make their claim, the Litvak replies ``even
higher.'' Ivanov's folk art for Cohen's book, reminiscent of Shulevitz' The
Treasure (Farrar, 1979) , is full of glowing colors which reflect the gleam in
the eyes of the people. The essence of the Eastern European culture is
effectively captured. This is a lively, spirited tale just ripe for reading
aloud or storytelling. Set prior to Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, it has a
place in holiday collections. Another version of this story can be found in
Esther Hautzig's adaptations of Peretz' stories, The Seven Good Years (Jewish

From School Library Journal Grade 3-5 Beni and Ahmed were both about ten
years old, and they both liked to play soccer. However, they were unable to
develop their friendship because Beni is an Israeli Jew and Ahmed a Jordanian
Arab, and the boundary between their homes was not to be crossed. Cohen ably and
subtly shows children how political borders and adult prejudices divide and
separate people. But she also injects hope and the possibility of a more stable
future into her story as the boys meet secretly, learn about each other's family
lives and spend time together harmoniously. The theme of peace in the Middle
East has been well presented to this age group in nonfiction works (Jacob Zim's
My Shalom, My Peace: Painting and Poems by Jewish and Arab Children McGraw Hill,
1975; o.p. and Gavriel and Jemal: Two Boys of Jerusalem Dodd, 1984 by Brent
Ashabranner). The Secret Grove serves to fill the gap in fiction for younger
readers. The soft black-and-white illustrations are adequate but do not capture
the Middle East as strongly as the text. Except for their headgear, the ethnic
qualities of the children, although central to the plot, are absent pictorially.

From Publishers Weekly Cohen is the author of many books for young readers,
including Molly's Pilgrim (which was made into an Academy Awardwinning film).
Her latest story tells of fourth-grader Emily Berg, one of a handful of Jewish
students in her school. It's Christmasthat time of year when Emily starts to
feel "a little funny." She's surrounded by Christmas carols, decorations,
projects and programs. But this year, Simeon Goldfarb, an Orthodox Jew who is
new to the school, refuses to participate in anything connected with Christmas.
Slowly, Emily joins his "revolution." It helps get rid of her "funny feeling,"
but no one, including her twin sister, understands her decision. This smooth
story is as much about changing friendships as it about faith, acceptance and
understanding. There is a mystery element that is a bit contrived, but young
readers, whether they celebrate Christmas or Hanukkah or other holidays will
enjoy this warmly told story and its gentle message. Ages 8-11. Copyright 1987

ABOUT THE BOOK Blessed Are You: A Comprehensive Guide to Jewish Prayer FROM
THE PUBLISHER Blessed Are You: A Comprehensive Guide to Jewish Prayer offers the
layperson, in a nonacademic, simple (but not simplistic) style, a one-volume,
encyclopedic presentation of virtually every aspect of prayer in Judaism. Rabbi
Jeffrey M. Cohen explores his subject from every angle: he looks at the
historical development of prayer, the role of the synagogue, the specific
rituals connected to prayer, important Jewish legal topics, the theology that is
expressed through prayer, and the texts that are used. Rabbi Cohen covers his
subjects by taking three routes. First, he presents a fascinating historical
treatment of prayer, from its earliest origins to the most recent developments,
and addresses such topics as when Jewish prayer became standardized and why. The
second section of Blessed Are You explains the theology of Jewish prayer: Why do
people pray? Does God answer prayer? Can we believe that the Almighty actually
changes His mind as a result of our prayerful requests? The book's third section
is a guided tour of the synagogue and its personnel, with enlightening
discussions of the role of the rabbi, the ways in which one becomes a rabbi, and
what being a rabbi really means. Rabbi Cohen also discusses the important ritual
objects found in the synagogue, and he includes a description of each detail in
the arrangement of the synagogue sanctuary. Rabbi Cohen, a well-known and highly
regarded British rabbi, has been teaching the subject of prayer in Judaism for a
few decades. His experience has enabled him to write a remarkably thorough,
easy-to-understand, "user-friendly" guide to one of the pivotal activities of
Jewish life. It is no wonder that both the present and former chief rabbis of
Great Britain have praised this volume in superlative terms. As Chief Rabbi
Jonathan Sacks writes, "No reader will come away without having learned
something fresh and unexpected, and few will fail to be charmed by Dr. Cohen's
distinctive voice. A delightful book, scholarly and

From Library Journal Since 1975 a series of articles and books have appeared
on the return of nonreligious American and Israeli youth to Orthodox Judaism. In
this study, sociologist Danzger interviews more than 200 newly Orthodox Jews and
their rabbis, teachers, and recruiters. In a clear and lucid style, he examines
the reasons for return, the schools established by Orthodox Judaism to deal with
this return, and the values and conflicts thus engendered. He also shows how
returnees are influenced by the recruiting program and what place they have in
Judaism. This work is distinguished from others in its examination of the
differences between Christian rebirth and Judaic return and of the
counterculture in the United States and Israel, and also in its careful
delineation of traditional and modernistic Orthodox Jewry. Recommended. -

Amazon.com To Be a Jew, Rabbi Hayim Halevy Donin's classic guide to Jewish
life, philosophy, and law has guided generations of Americans, Europeans, and
Israelis to discover the treasures of their own religious traditions. First
published in 1972, the book still stands as a reliable, practical and versatile
resource for everyone from young girls preparing for bat mitzvah to old men
returning to their spiritual roots. The book begins with an overview of
Judaism's basic credo (including chapters on Israel's people, land, God, and
Torah), moves on to describe the laws governing Jews' daily lives, the Jewish
calendar, and "The Special Occasions of Life" from birth to death and mourning.
One great strength of To Be a Jew is its blending of folk wisdom and scholarly
learning. Rabbi Donin not only describes what right belief and righteous action
look like but provides a rationale for these observances that engages and
embraces the basic conditions of modern life. --Michael Joseph Gross--This text

From Publishers Weekly The Nazis' murder of 1.5 million Jewish children is
the focus of this pioneering study. Expelled from school, forced to wear the
yellow star, Jewish children in German-occupied Europe had their family lives
shattered by anti-Semitic legislation prior to the outbreak of war. Later some
hid in attics or forests; others concealed their identities but remained
visible, constantly threatened by starvation, disease or selection for the gas
chambers. Yet, Yale scholar Dwork demonstrates, Jewish children created their
own mental space, where play, love and relationships continued amid the evil and
horror. Tapping letters, diaries, drawings and oral histories of survivors,
Dwork adds a poignant new dimension to Holocaust studies. Copyright 1991 Reed
Business Information, Inc. From School Library Journal YA-- A poignant and
gripping story by an author who writes with a heart. Dwork begins her history by
reiterating the grim statistic that only 11 percent of European Jewish children
survived the war and that over one and a half million children were killed. She
documents her narrative by weaving personal recollections of survivors and
entries from their diaries. Readers will be transfixed by the children's daily
lives--the ordinariness as well as the atrocities. A new dimension in books
about the Holocaust. --Mary Quinn, Fairfax County Pub . Lib . , VA Copyright

Amazon.com Some books are like revelations, they open the spirit to
unimaginable possibilities. The Chalice and the Blade is one of those
magnificent key books that can transform us and...initiate fundamental changes
in the world. With the most passionate eloquence, Riane Eisler proves that the
dream of peace is not an impossible utopia. -- Isabelle Allende, author of The
House of the Spirits From Publishers Weekly Women played leading roles in the
first Christian communities; Jesus' teachings had a feminist bent; ancient
Hebrews worshipped the prehistoric goddess-mother well into monarchic times; and
Nazis, with their system of male dominance, were a direct throwback to the
Indo-European or Aryan invaders whom they crudely imitated. These controversial
ideas and findings suggest the thrust of Eisler's highly readable synthesis. She
convincingly documents the global shift from egalitarian to patriarchal
societies, interweaving new archeological evidence and feminist scholarship. In
her scenario, as womenonce veneratedwere degraded to pawns controlled by men,
social cooperation gave way to reliance on violence, hierarchy and
authoritarianism. The book, despite its jargon, is an important contribution to
social history. Eisler wrote The Equal Rights Handbook. Copyright 1987 Reed

the first ever in which women play a large role. From the Publisher "An
important work of scholarship and a sudden clear window onto the heretofore
sealed world of the Hasidic reaction to the Holocaust. Its true stories and
fanciful tales are a profound and often poignant insight into the souls of those
who suffered terribly at the hands of the Nazis and who managed somehow to use
that very suffering as the raw material for their renewed lives."--Chaim

From AudioFile This is the first novel by the author of numerous darkly
humorous stories and plays of contemporary life--notably "Steambath," which was
made into a cable TV series, and the screenplay for SPLASH. The title character
of this opus is a classic anxiety-ridden East Coast Jewish male going through
the usual crises as son, husband, and ulcer-ridden father. Some say Phillip Roth
does it better; some say Roth just does it differently. Judge for yourself with
this cassette, nicely, albeit frantically, read by Adam Grupper. Aside from
trying a little too hard, Grupper has the milieu, tone, and characters down
cold. An interview with the author precedes and ends the tape. Y.R. Š AudioFile

Hardcover HarperCollins Publishers
From School Library Journal Grade 6-9 Sandy Fishman tries to escape the
clutches of an over-involved and quintessentially Jewish mother. Mom's dreams
for her chunky daughter include a date for the prom, an early and successful
marriage, and a new slimness. Lured by exotic music, Sandy joins a belly dancing
class, and to her surprise, she enjoys the dancing, by means of which she not
only annoys her mother but trims her figure as well. After some twists and turns
of the plot, mother and daughter reach an understanding of sorts; passive Dad
speaks up at last; and Sandy, new boyfriend in tow, goes to the prom as a belly
dancer, not as a guest. There are several subplots; for example, a slim friend
with a highly-structured life and a laid-back, flower-child mother is offered as
an obvious contrast to Sandy and her mother. There is also an elderly widow who
is teaching Sandy to speak Yiddish and supplying her with cookies and
grandmotherly advice, another zinger for mom. Gerber's writing is only adequate,
with shallow characterizations and an obvious plot, manipulated for a happy
ending. The insight into the world of belly dancing is an unusual aspect, but
the whole ethnic tone of the book is gratuitous and offensive, with Sandy's
mother an especially unfortunate stereotype. Ruth Levien, Rockville Centre

ABOUT THE BOOK Shcharansky: Hero of Our Time FROM THE CRITICS Publishers
Weekly Released from a Soviet prison this past February in an East-West ``spy
swap,'' although he had never been a spy, Russian dissident Anatol Shcharansky
was reunited with his wife in Israel, ending a nine-year ordeal. His only crime
had been campaigning on behalf of Soviet Jews like himself for exit visas and
defending Jews' religious expression. Probably the fullest account to date of
the refuseniks, their struggle in the U.S.S.R., and their campaigning in the
West, this day-by-day log of setbacks, trials, arrests and escapes shows that
the Soviet bureaucracy still views the crushing of the Jewish movement as a
priority. Gilbert's stunning re-creation of Shcharansky's 1978 mock-trial is as
memorable as Koestler's Darkness at Noon. Shcharansky's letters from prison to
his wife and family overflow with faith, determination, courage and resilience.
Gilbert wrote The Holocaust and The Jews of Hope. 25,000 first printing. (May
30) Library Journal The release in February of the imprisoned dissident Anatoly
Shcharansky makes this biography especially timely. Originally intended as an
effort to keep up public awareness of Shcharansky's plight and to pressure for
his release, the book is as much about the Jewish emigration movement as it is
about the man. Based on interviews with people who had known and worked with
Shcharansky over the years and on letters he wrote from prison, this is a
biography of the public persona, not of the private human being. For example,
extensive chapters on the trial and imprisonment say nothing about the
prisoner's emotional state. While fuller biographies, and even Shcharansky's
memoirs, may soon be available, subject collections will want to consider.

Hardcover Henry Holt & Co
Amazon.com A compelling book on an ugly subject, The Holocaust may be the
finest book available for those who want a general understanding of how the rise
of the Nazis in Germany impacted the Jewish people--as well as those who want to
learn exactly what was at stake in the Second World War. When The Holocaust was
first published in 1986, Elie Wiesel gave it a glowing review, writing, "This
book must be read and reread." It occasionally seems like a numbing catalog of
unspeakable horrors, but how else does one write a comprehensive history of such
a great tragedy? Gilbert is an accomplished author with a frighteningly long
list of books to his credit; this is among his best.--This text refers to the
Paperback edition. From Publishers Weekly A poignant introduction by the author
(official biographer of Winston Churchill) is followed by his instructive
analysis of anti-Semitism in Europe, from Martin Luther's venomous fulminations
against Jews to the motivating power of anti-Semitism in the National Socialist
movement. Hitler's "final solution" began formally within hours of the German
invasion of Russia, a campaign that, as Gilbert shows, provided an opportunity
for genocide hitherto lacking. With a relentless accumulation of detail and
eyewitness accounts, he writes of the systematic efficiency of the Nazi attempt
to destroy European Jewry and the widespread disbelief that such could be
happening. Though the figure of Adolf Hitler remains in the background, such
executives as Himmler, Eichmann and Mengele are very much in evidence throughout
the gripping narrative (there is new material on the latter's labors at
Auschwitz). An element in the historical tragedy that Gilbert stresses is the
deliberate destruction of childrenone of Mengele's principal interestswhich the
author calls "the new barbarism." The narrative reaches its dreadful climax with
the convergence on the death camps of the Allied and Soviet armies, a time when
"rescue and slaughter marched hand in hand." A particularly disturbing section
deals with outbreaks of anti-Semitism after the German surrender. On July 4,
1946, for instancemore than a year after V-E Day42 Jews were massacred by Poles
in the town of Kielce. Gilbert brings within the pages of this volume all the
major substantiated evidence of Jewish resistance throughout the war, plus many
examples of Gentiles risking their lives to protect Hitler's prey. Photos. Major

From Library Journal Glinert (Hebrew and Jewish studies, Univ. of London) has
brought together a collection of more than 600 entries on "the best known and
most lovable Hebrew words and sayings." Although the style is light-hearted, the
author knows his subject. The arrangement is alphabetical according to an
excellent transliteration. Entries range from the familiar Bar Mitzvah and
chutzpah to rachmanut ("compassion") and tsarr gidul banim ("the stress of
raising children"). Definitions are drawn from literature, folklore, and history
and from everyday and esoteric sources. Glinert delights in sharing punchy
anecdotes and humorous stories. Nor does he slight etymology. An introductory
essay surveys the fate of Hebrew from its ancient beginnings to the present, a
fate which parallels that of the Jewish people. A significant virtue of this
book is the author's clear explanation of the difference between Hebrew and
Yiddish. He relates the history and development of each language and notes their
intersecting points. This title will be welcomed on its own merits for its easy
readability and informative entries. One of the few on the subject available to
readers of English, it makes no pretense of being comprehensive. Recommended for
libraries without William Chomsky's classic Hebrew: The Eternal Language (Jewish
Pubn. Society, 1975). - Libby K. White, Schenectady Cty. P.L., Copyright 1992

key to a deep understanding of Jewish prayer in general, at the same time
offering a grasp of the Jewish view of life. In his analysis, Grishaver follows
the six words he calls the "brakhah formula" back to their origins and uncovers
their full meaning.

From Publishers Weekly This lengthy, highly ambitious, phantasmagoric
treatment of the ineffable Holocaust is far less accessible than Grossman's
critically acclaimed The Yellow Wind , nonfiction reportage that elucidated the
West Bank imbroglio. What begins as a wrenching portrait of Momik, an
emotionally scarred nine-year-old Israeli child of Holocaust survivors, and his
warped fantasy world, soon metamorphoses into fiction penned by the adult Momik.
Now a self-conscious, tortured writer, Momik the man believes he is the vessel
for new prose by both Bruno Schulz, the legendary Polish-Jewish author murdered
by the Nazis, and Momik's great-uncle, Anshel Wasserman, whose popular
children's adventures are updated and distorted as Momik imagines him spinning
tales for a Nazi commandant of a concentration camp. Although stylistically
daring, the bulk of Grossman's novel never re-creates the pathos that introduced
Momik the child. As Wasserman's story unfolds, "without any appreciable logic or
trace of plot, without concern for the sacred unity of time and place," its
appeal will elude many readers. Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.
From Library Journal The author of the nonfiction The Yellow Wind ( LJ 4/15/88),
a work about the Israeli-Palestinian dilemma that received much acclaim last
year, now turns his hand to fiction. The year is 1959, and nine-year-old
protagonist and narrator Momik--the only child of survivors of the
Holocaust--dutifully copies all the exhortations of his parents and neighbors
into a notebook. Grappling with such ominous terms as "over there," "the nasty
beast," and "children of the heart," Momik learns to hide all his feelings and
shield himself from all attachments. But eventually he is touched by humanity,
learning that loving kindness exists alongside the horrors of history. An
incredibly original and imaginative novel by one of Israel's truly gifted young
writers. The Yellow Wind was one of LJ 's "Best Books of 1988." See the article
in the January issue, p.40. - Ed. -- Molly Abramowitz, Silver Spring, Md.

From Library Journal Both editors have totally divergent views regarding
Jewish religious observance (one is Orthodox, the other Reform) yet both are
deeply committed to the concept of women's participation in synagogue worship.
Historically, the role of Jewish women in public worship has been limited. This
excellent compendium devotes one section to historical source material and
another to halacha (Jewish religious law). The fascinating essays in the third
section are authored by a broad spectrum of contributors and contain personal
religious reflections vis-a-vis new modes of worship. The topics include the
experiences of three generations of Iranian women, becoming a rabbi, becoming a
cantor, egalitarianism and the Havurah movement, and growing up Lubavitch. This
is essential reading for anyone interested in contemporary Judaism or women's
issues. - Carol R. Glatt, VA Medical Ctr. Lib., Phila delphia Copyright 1992

ABOUT THE BOOK Jester and the Kings FROM THE CRITICS Publishers Weekly A
small child when he and his parents were rescued from the Warsaw ghetto by a
Polish printer, Halter, author of The Book of Abraham , became a highly regarded
Paris-based artist. This vivid autobiography, describing his experiences as an
exiled Jew in Russia, Uzbekistan and now in France, centers on his ceaseless
struggle to help bring peace to the Middle East. Encouraged by Gunter Grass,
Heinrich Boll, Italo Calvino, Elie Wiesel and other writers, Halter and his wife
formed a group of intellectuals who tried to succeed where diplomats and
soldiers had failed: in setting up favorable conditions for dialogue between
Arabs and Israelis. In their magazine Elements , in political conferences and in
frequent visits to Israel and the Arab countries, they provided forums for such
conversations. Halter's fast-moving account of his meetings with De Gaulle,
Mendes-France, Ben-Gurion, Golda Meir, Dayan, Begin, Heykal, Sadat, Sana Hasan,
Arafat and other leaders swings between hope and despair, between disappointment
and exhilaration, but is always heartfelt. ( July ) Library Journal Halter is a
Polish-born Jew, an artist, and a writer ( The Book of Abraham , LJ 4/1/86) who
makes Paris his home. He is also leader of the International Committee for Peace
in the Middle East, and most of this autobiography concerns these political
activities. Halter gives the reader a very good perspective on the thoughts of
European and Third World intelligentsia, particularly on Middle East politics.
Halter publishes the literary magazine Elements, which is also strongly
political in content, and travels about Europe and the Middle East meeting with
national leaders, representatives of the PLO, and fellow bellet rists. Some of
his interesting insights supplement the general run-of-the-mill information
about politics. Recommended for those interested in the arts and politics.--

From Library Journal This dramatic and riveting biography of an Israeli folk
hero recounts the story of Szenes, who in September 1939, at age 18, left her
comfortable middle-class Hungarian home for Palestine, fired with enthusiasm for
the Zionist dream. Five years later, in 1944, she was executed as an Allied spy
after having parachuted behind German lines in an abortive rescue mission on
behalf of Hungarian Jews. Most biographies of Szenes rightly concentrate on her
indomitable heroism and her lyrical, poetic soul. The refreshing feature of this
narrative lies in its illumination of the ambivalence experienced by this
intellectually gifted teenager who, by sheer willpower, subordinated her
profound middle-class urban and cultural interests to the Zionist ideal. Highly
recommended for specialist and general reader. Benny Kraut, Judaic Studies

ABOUT THE BOOK S. J. Perelman: A Life ANNOTATION S.J. Perelman, New Yorker
humorist, screenwriter, radio, publishing, and TV personality was one of the
wittiest and most sardonic humorists of the 20th century. FROM THE CRITICS
Publishers Weekly In this well-researched but humdrum biography of the noted
Brooklyn-born author (19041979)``he preferred to be thought of as a writer, not
a humorist''we follow Perelman's experiences from a poor Jewish boyhood in
Providence, R.I. and aspiring playwright in New York to screenwriting in
Hollywood and eventual emergence as a revered cult figure. Word-play and parody,
not self-revealing emotions, were the foundations of his humor and personality.
Inhibited, egocentric, insecure, Perelman was a meticulous stylist, fastidious
dresser and ceaseless womanizer, but he never learned to be a loving husband or
a warm, nurturing father to his two children, shows Herrmann. When he was in the
mood, he could be charming socially, but in business he tended to be tough,
suspicious (``to the point of paranoia''), rude and high-handed. Herrmann (With
Malice Toward All describes his relations with Groucho Marx, Bert Lahr, Dorothy
Parker and other entertainers, but focuses on his long infatuation with
Nathanael West, the brother-in-law whose early death had a devastating effect on
him. Sid (as Herrmann prefers to refer to Perelman) was an intensely private
man, and he remains a rather blurry figureand certainly not an attractive one.
Photos not seen by PW. (August 25) Library Journal When Sid Perelman died in
1979, states this intimate biography (the first since his death), ``a special
type of humorhighly literate and inventive, yet cranky and thoroughly
irreverentpassed from the contemporary scene.'' For 40 years, Perelman's
misanthropic yet wildly comic wit graced the pages of the New Yorker , strongly
influencing everyone from Groucho Marx to Woody Allen. But Perelman remained
elusive, an intensely private man on whom this exhaustive, richly anecdotal
treatment sheds much welcome light. Perelman's troubled marriage to Nathanael
West's sister Laura; his close relationship with West; his recurrent depression;
and the sad irony of his decline after Laura's death in 1970 are all explored,
helping to illuminate this unique American humorist. David Sowd, Stark Cty.

Jesus Author: Kamentsky, Ellen ISBN: 1-882459-00-8 LCCN: Dewey: Number: |
Paperback Sapphire Press
From Publishers Weekly Kamentsky spent three years in Jews for Jesus,
including some time as a staff member and missionary, an experience that she
looks back on with loathing and some hard-earned self-awareness. At its best,
this book is a portrait of Jews for Jesus as a group that combines the worst
aspects of cult behavior and Reagan-era grabbiness. Unfortunately, she is so
close to the emotional tensions of that period of her life that much of the book
has a hectoring, shrill tone, weakened by relentlessly negative
characterizations from the outset; the reader quickly begins to wonder why she
joined in the first place. Regrettably, the answer to that question is
unsatisfying. Though Kamentsky explains how a frenzied life in New York City
left her with a spiritual void, the one instance of moral hypocrisy she
encountered at a community seder fails to account for why she turned to
Christianity to fill it. On the positive side, she tellingly limns the group's
obsessive drive to make more and more converts. But as Kamentsky tells of her
rise up the "corporate" ladder, the book begins to resemble a confessional by a
burnt-out yuppie climber. Photos not seen by PW. Copyright 1993 Reed Business

Hardcover E P Dutton
From Publishers Weekly Kamin, a Cleveland rabbi, compassionately discusses
many important questions about life and behavior that teens confront as they
navigate the difficult path to adulthood. Touching on topics from sex and drugs
to interfaith dating, each of the book's 22 chapters begins with a direct
question that parents are likely to hear at some point: Why do people kill each
other? Do I have to worry about AIDS? How will I know when I am successful in
life? Kamin formulates the Three L's of good parent-teen dynamics: Look, Listen
and Love, which translate into eye contact, acknowledging the teen's concern and
offering unstinting love?a powerful mix that can alleviate the anxiety that
often prompts teens' questions. Drawing from his personal experiences in
counseling and as a parent, Kamin mixes advice and anecdote in this ecumenical,
liberal?though not heavily Jewish?guide. While there's little new here, Kamin
offers unbending reinforcement of the belief that parents' loving support is the
most important gift they can offer their children. Copyright 1995 Reed Business

From School Library Journal Grade 7-12 To Charles Goldberg, life at 16 is a
real bummer. He's overweight, not very good at most of the things he does, and
intimidated by the women in his life. He thinks a lot about sex, and he doesn't
have a girl friend. But most of all he's bothered about his beloved grandmother,
whose deteriorating mental condition (due to Alzheimer's disease) has begun to
affect the family in adverse ways. Finally Charles' doctor father decides to put
Gustel in a nursing home. The night before she is to leave, she mercifully dies
in her sleep. Charles, his mother, and his young brother are saddened but
relieved by her death; his father reacts very peculiarly, however (and readers
will probably figure out how Gustel died so conveniently). A few months later,
his father, a heavy drinker and smoker, suddenly dies, too. Despite this rather
slight plot, Klein's novel is a good one. The devasting effects of Alzheimer's
on those close to its victims, the difficulty of placing a family member in a
nursing home, and Charles' growing understanding of both his family and himself
make the story a powerful one. The characters are well drawn, especially
Charles' younger brother Kaylo, and Charles, never the dud he sees himself as at
the book's beginning, is a likable male protagonist who becomes even more
likable by the book's end. (It's too bad the jacket artist didn't read the book.
The Charles shown isn't overweight, doesn't wear glasses, and is good looking.)

Simon & Schuster THE REAL NAME of the Little League team was the B'nai
B'rith, but everyone called them the B'nai Bagels. Their manager was Bessie
Setzer, but every one called her Mother Bagel, and the team grew to love her and
even Spencer, Brother Bagel, their coach. Which was fine for everyone but Mark
Setzer. For him it made problems. Because with a mother as manager and a brother
as coach, he felt he had lost his right to be awful on the field and had gained
a lot of sticky situations. Then, in addition to worrying about his performance
on the baseball team, be had to worry about his performance at his Bar Mitzvah
and about his friend, Hersch, who had moved to another part of town and found
another best friend. Practicing in the relative privacy of The Projects, where
there were some very good and very interesting players, helped Mark's game. It
took more than that to help the rest, though. And there were some tough moments
before Mark felt competent to handle the social situations and moral decisions
his position demanded of him. Inside Flap Copy Mark Seltzer thought he had
enough aggravation studying for his Bar Mitzvah and losing his best
friend. It's the last straw when his mother becomes the new manager
of his Little League baseball team and drags his older brother, Spencer, along
as the coach. No one knows what to expect with a mother for a manager, but soon
Mark and the other players are surprised to see how much they're improving due
to coach Spencer's strategy and helpful hints from "Mother Bagel." It looks like
nothing can stop them from becoming champs--until Mark hears some startling
news!--This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From Publishers Weekly When Bad Things Happen to Good People and When All
You've Ever Wanted Isn't Enough have attracted scores of people to Kushner as a
spiritual counsellor and his new book promises to be another bestseller. The
lack of a question mark after the title signals the rabbi's conviction: he
doesn't ask, he states that we all need God. Kushner's approach is pragmatic and
ecumenical rather than didactic; he believes that God hears people even when
they protest divine "mishandling" of their affairs, complain or argue as clearly
as they pray. Readers will be intrigued by the author's refutation of the big
bangper web. theory on the world's origin, among the elemental subjects he
covers. This is an inspirational book for all, no matter whether religious or
skeptic. Jewish Book Club selection; BOMC alternate. Copyright 1989 Reed
Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal Attaining and then maintaining
religious sense or persuasion is often difficult today. Our culture of
individualism, self-sufficiency, and competitiveness thwarts, even nullifies
spiritual inclinations, with technology a prime contender for our reverence even
though it is totally "witless and unimaginative" on its own. Yet many people are
vaguely aware of something lacking in their lives. Rabbi Kushner (best known for
When Bad Things Happen to Good People ) believes that "human life has meaning .
. . but only in religious terms." According to this crucial realization, it is
religion that connects us to God and community. In the end, Rabbi Kushner goes
so far as to define religion as community rather than theology--a point of
contention. What, then, would be the point of his title? But mainly, he attempts
to transcend differences while conveying basic spiritual truths. Recommended for
general audiences. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 7/89. - Carol J. Lichtenberg,

From Publishers Weekly Kuskin chronicles Jerusalem's countless destructions

1 Up Through lilting poetic prose and glowing woodcuts, Kuskin and Frampton
present a hommage to the holy city of Jerusalem, home of the three major
religions. Four thousand years of the city's history are described, beginning
with King David's conquest over Goliath, continuing through the Six Day War. In
spite of all the battles, burnings, and rebuildings, the city stands
majestically ``shining still.'' It is to Kuskin's credit that she describes the
city's 4000-year history in such a brief form, while still conveying a personal
sense of the place. She sometimes interweaves verses with the rhythmic prose.
Frampton's woodcuts, in a predominantly golden color accented with other bright
hues, are elegantly composed and radiant. This book, beautifully illustrated and
well told, conveys strong feelings for the city of Jerusalem. Micki S. Nevett,

From School Library Journal The life and accomplishments of this great Jewish
woman are simplified in a dignified manner in this very readable biography.
Szold founded Hadassah, today the largest women's Zionist organization in
America. In 1920, at the age of 60, she emigrated to Palestine to work for
improved health care. In the 1930s, she became the driving force behind the
Youth Aliyah movement, which helped resettle Jewish children who had escaped
from Nazi-occupied countries. Kustanowitz captures Szold's indomitable spirit,
and adeptly integrates necessary background on Judaism and the Holocaust into
the smooth-flowing text. The chapter on Szold's childhood emphasizes her love of
books and learning and the importance of education without being didactic. This
will be a useful addition to collections needing shorter, quality biographies
comparable to Our Golda (Viking, 1984) by David Adler. It is for a younger
audience than Daughter of My People (Lodestar, 1987) by Hazel Krantz. --Micki S.

From School Library Journal Grade 4-6 A survival story with a unique twist:
15 Orthodox Jews are flying to an isolated Jewish community, taking with them a
gift of a Torah scroll. Their plane, leaking fuel, makes an emergency landing on
a lake surrounded by forests. The passengers (young children, teens and adults)
evacuate the damaged plane and try to survive in the autumnal forest, all the
while maintaining their Orthodox life style. With structure, order and
cooperation, they ingeniously devise utensils and tools and prepare food.
Despite unhappiness, despair and worry, they are supportive of one another and
operate as a community until rescued. The writing is uneven, and at times
awkward, but there is suspense and adventure. Black-and-white drawings are stiff
but adequate. Adult characterization is good, but the children, with one or two
exceptions, are thinly developed. George's My Side of the Mountain (Dutton,
1967) and Julie of the Wolves (Harper, 1972) are superior books. However, this
book has a place in collections where the unusual combination of wilderness
survival and Jewish orthodoxy will be wanted. A glossary and chapter notes
explain Hebrew terms and religious laws referred to in the text. Ruth Shire,

From Publishers Weekly Following the story begun in Journey to America , this
novel takes up the adventures of the Platts, a Jewish family that has escaped
from Nazi Germany. In Brooklyn and, later, Southern California, the three girls
adjust quickly to the U.S., each working toward her dream, even after World War
II begins. They find anti-Semitism, experience kindness and realize the
frightening parallel to Nazi Germany in the internment of Japanese-Americans on
the West Coast. While there is little drama, and the story moves too quickly for
readers to become involved fully in the lives of the characters, their
day-to-day struggles and triumphs are lovingly and happily told. Although not as
affecting as Aranka Siegal's Upon the Head of a Goat and Grace in the Wilderness
, Levitin's novel offers a brief look into America of the '40s from an unusual
perspective. Ages 10-up. Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc. From
School Library Journal Grade 6-9-- This sequel to Levitin's Journey to America
(Aladdin, 1986) , takes up exactly where the earlier book ended--in 1940, with
the family reunited in New York City. In a first-person narration, Lisa, the
middle daughter, tells the story of their "silver days" from 1940 to 1943,
conveying the strength and spirit that enabled the family to not only survive
being uprooted from their comfortable home in Germany, but also to make a new
life for themselves. Much of the humor in the book comes from Lisa's father, a
hard-working, energetic, and optimistic man. The girls' mother is a
strong-willed woman who is almost undone by the death of her mother, who chose
to stay in Germany. Lisa is also strongly influenced by her beautiful and
intelligent older sister and a lively, sensitive younger sister. A move to
California leads to more disruption but ultimately results in more economic
security and a chance for Lisa to study dance seriously again. Because of the
episodic nature of the story, readers get to know these people well,
experiencing their highs and lows, and in the end can only wish them well.
Although this book is a sequel, it can be read independently without any
difficulty. --Amy Kellman, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Copyright 1989 Reed

ABOUT THE BOOK Jewish Marriage: Rabbinic Law, Legend, and Custom FROM THE
PUBLISHER Part I of this volume is a survey of Jewish marriage from biblical
times to the present. Rabbi Lewittes covers the various aspects of marriage,
from the ceremony itself to the relationship between husband and wife. He
highlights the laws of family purity (Taharat Ha-Mishpachah) and discusses the
integral role of the Jewish family in Judaism. Part II of this volume deals with
divorce in Jewish law and custom. What were the grounds for divorce in the past,
and what are they now? What is considered proper divorce procedure, and what
documents need be involved? Under what circumstances are husband and wife
forbidden to remarry? Even the happiest bride and groom should know the answers
to these important questions. Arranged in chronological sequence, using
nontechnical language, this volume is accessible to the layman of both Jewish
and non-Jewish heritage.

ABOUT THE BOOK The King of Children: The Life and Death of Janusz Korczak
FROM THE PUBLISHER Janusz Korczak was known throughout Europe as a Pied Piper of
destitute children even before the onslaught of World War II. But Korczak
stepped into legend. Refusing offers for his own safety, and with defiant
dignity, he led the orphans under his care in the Warsaw Ghetto to the trains
that would take them to Treblinka. An educator and pediatrician, Korczak, a
Polish Jew, introduced progressive orphanages for both the Jewish and Catholic
children in Warsaw. Determined to shield his children from the injustices of the
adult world, he built these orphanages into "just communities" with their own
parliaments and children's courts. Korczak also founded the first national
children's newspaper, testified on behalf of children in juvenile courts, and
trained teachers and parents in "moral education," with his books How to Love a
Child and How to Respect a Child. FROM THE CRITICS Library Journal Lifton has
brought her considerable experience as a writer for and about children to this
sensitive, intelligent, and well-written biography of a remarkable
man-Polish-Jewish doctor, writer, and advocate of children's rights Janusz
Korczak (born Henryk Goldszmit, 1878-1942). Based on Korczak's diary and other
writings, and on interviews with surviving orphans and students he cared for,
Lifton tells how the doctor devoted his life to deprived Jewish and Polish
children in Warsaw, founded and directed a model orphanage, and pushed for
Polish-Jewish reconciliation even as national animosity in pre-World War II
Poland was growing. Not only a defender of children's rights, Korczak stood by
his orphans, perishing with them at Treblinka in 1942. Highly recommended. James

From Kirkus Reviews A forceful analysis of attempts to deny the Nazi
Holocaust. Lipstadt (Religion/Emory University; Beyond Belief, 1985--not
reviewed) traces the history of Holocaust revisionism and contends that it can
no longer be ignored, showing how Holocaust-deniers, once dismissed as a lunatic
fringe, have been growing in numbers and influence during the past 20 years.
Citing groups like the Institute for Historical Review, publications like The
Spotlight, politicians like David Duke, and academicians like Leonard Jeffries,
Lipstadt presents numerous examples of attempts to prove that the extermination
of six million Jews is a hoax; that only a few thousand Jews died in the camps
from disease; that the Allied bombings of German cities were worse than any Nazi
offense; and that the ``true victims'' of WW II were the German people. These
distortions of recorded history, argues the author, threaten to undermine our
Western rationalist tradition and to legitimize the politicization of history.
To Lipstadt, the common thread among Holocaust deniers is a ``purely
anti-Semitic diatribe'' portraying Jews as victimizers. Self-declared scholars
like Arthur R. Butz (whose credentials are in electronics) claim that Jews used
the world's sympathy after the war to ``displace'' another people, establish the
nation of Israel, and ``steal'' billions in reparations from their German and
Western ``cash cows.'' Lipstadt argues vehemently against giving revisionists a
forum in the name of free speech or freedom of the press, and she details the
efforts of California revisionist Bradley Smith, who pushed a ``Holocaust was a
hoax'' campaign in college newspapers throughout the US. Lipstadt contends that
``the responses to Holocaust denial by both students and faculty graphically
demonstrate the susceptibility of an educated and privileged segment to the kind
of reasoning that creates a hospitable climate for the rewriting of history.''

Children's Literature - Susie Wilde This Newbery-award winning book is the story
of a ten-year-old Danish girl who courageously helps to save the family of her
Jewish friend. Lowry was inspired by the letter of a young Dane, who, on the eve
of his execution, reminded young and old to remember and from that remembering
"to create an ideal of human decency." School Library Journal Gr 3-7The gripping
story of a ten-year-old Danish girl and her family's courageous efforts to
smuggle Jews out of their Nazi-occupied homeland to safety in Sweden. Readers
are taken to the very heart of Annemarie's experience, and, through her eyes,
come to understand the true meaning of bravery. (Mar. 1989) AudioFile
Ten-year-old Annemarie Johannesen becomes involved in the evacuation of Jews
from Denmark when her family hides her friend, Ellen Rosen, and then aids in her
escape. Annemarie learns about the meaning of bravery and the necessity of being
protected by lies from loved ones in a time of life-threatening secrets. With
vocal versatility, Blair Brown portrays the soft-spoken Johannesens, as well as
the loud, brutal Nazis. When important conversations take place, she lowers her
voice to cue listeners to pay closer attention. The combination of Brown's
steady voice and Lowry's dramatic story creates a mesmerizing production. J.F.M.

Paperback Ballantine Books
From Booklist Angels are big--very big--right at the moment. As a testament
to this sweeping assault on our predominantly secular pop culture, an angel
recently appeared on the cover of Newsweek. Margolies' small-format, airily
designed volume looks like another product fresh off the angel
assembly-line--the checkout-counter gift book. But appearances can deceive,
especially where angels are concerned. For example, most books about angels deal
with the Christian variety, but Margolies focuses on Jewish angels. No mere
collection of angelic trivia, the book supplies a wealth of solid historical
information and is written in an almost scholarly manner, whether the topic is
angels in antiquity, in literature and mysticism, or throughout Jewish history.
Margolies even extends his range beyond benevolent angels, offering a
provocative discussion of Satan and his band of lost angels. A thoughtful,
fascinating look at a hot topic. Ilene Cooper Book Description "A captivating
work that will well reward the reader...A well-researched and clearly written
guide through one of the most fascinating aspects of Judaism: the multi-facted
world of angels from the sacred time of the Bible to the secular time of Isaac
Bashevis Singer." CHAIM POTOK Rabbi and scholar Morris B. Margolies pores
through nearly three thousand years of literature and lore in this enlightening
exploration of the angels, who shape and reflect Jewish beliefs, hopes, and
fears. An engaging compendium of angelic lore, A GATHERING OF ANGELS is also a
memorable study of the evolving role of angels--from Biblical times to the
present, from messenger of God to metaphor for good and evil.

Hardcover Harpercollins Childrens Books
From Publishers Weekly As a successor to Never to Forget: The Jews of the
Holocaust , Meltzer has written this work about a hidden side of history to show
"that we need not give in to evil." The acts of generosity recounted here are
challenging, as Meltzer puts it, since readers may doubt whether they, in
similar straits, would behave as decently. One lesson is clear: "Nobody survived
without help from others," and thousands of Jews were saved because of daring
acts of kindness. Oskar Schinkler, an industrialist, protected 1200 Jews in his
factory; the entire French village of Le Chambon harbored Jews; and 8000 Jews
were smuggled to safety by Danes in very little time. The most remarkable aspect
of this book, aside from the array of astonishing facts, is Meltzer's clear
sense of perspective. Even the thorny question of why the pope failed to defend
Italian Jews is objectively handled. In contrast to its sensationalistic cover,
this is a calm book (about extreme events) that lifts the spirit. Photos not

Description Between the years 1933 and 1945, Adolf Hitler organized the Murder
of six million Jews while the world looked on silently. But not all people stood
back in fear. In every Nazioccupied Country, at every level of society, there
were non-Jews who had the courage to resist. From the king of Denmark, refusing
to force Jewish Danes to wear yellow stars, to the Dutch student, registering
Jewish babies as Gentiles and hiding children in her home, a small number of
people had the strength to reject the inhumanity they were ordered to support.
Here are their stories: thrilling, terrifying, and most of all, inspiring. For
in the horror that was the Holocaust, some human decency could still shine
through. "There are no Rambo-style heroics here, just short accounts of quiet
bravery. It is an inspiring testimonial." --The San Francisco
Examiner-Chronicle?A companion to Never to Forget, this is the story of those
gentiles who sought to rescue their Jewish neighbors from annihilation during
World War II.Succeeding chapters describe the efforts of Germans, Poles, Danes,
and others to save Jewish friends and strangers from the Nazis. A story that

From Publishers Weekly In a first-class piece of investigative reporting,
Miller, a New York Times editor, explores how people in six countries preserve
or distort memories of the Holocaust. In Germany, she found a young generation
undertaking a shamed, angry reckoning with the Nazi past. Austrians, who were
Hitler's first enthusiastic allies, now paint themselves as his first victims.
The Netherlands' wartime record with respect to Jews is "in many respects
appalling," Miller observes in a chapter on that country (whose "unofficial
patron saint" is Anne Frank) that will stun readers. In France Miller attended
the trial of Nazi Klaus Barbie, a drama that generated slight interest among the
French, who prefer to keep alive the myth of a glorious Resistance. In the
Soviet Union, she discovered that the Holocaust is not officially recognized,
even though invading Germans exterminated some 700,000 Soviet Jews. This
shocking survey is itself an act of remembrance. Copyright 1990 Reed Business

ABOUT THE BOOK Yerushalmi - the Talmud of the Land of Israel: An Introduction
FROM THE PUBLISHER The Yerushalmi, also known as the Jerusalem Talmud or the
Talmud of the Land of Israel, is the lesser known and lesser studied of the two
Talmuds of Jewish tradition. The "talmud" that is generally studied, the one
that has had the most profound influence on Jewish life and culture, is actually
the Bavli, or Babylonian Talmud. These two Talmuds, developed in different parts
of the Jewish world nearly two millennia ago, differ in many ways, despite the
fact that they are both structured as Jewish oral law as set forth by Rabbi
Judah the Prince. The Yerushalmi, famous for its incomprehensibility, consists
of hundreds of pages of what Dr. Jacob Neusner calls "barely intelligible
writing." In The Yerushalmi - The Talmud of the Land of Israel: An Introduction,
Dr. Neusner, regarded by some as one of the foremost Jewish scholars today,
offers the first clear and careful booklength study of this important document,
and he provides the modern reader with a rich understanding of its history, its
content, and its significance. As Dr. Neusner explains, "The Yerushalmi has
suffered an odious but deserved reputation for the difficulty in making sense of
its discourse. That reputation is only partly true; there are many passages that
are scarcely intelligible. But there are a great many more that are entirely or
mainly accessible." In this groundbreaking introduction to the Yerushalmi, Dr.
Neusner looks at the Talmud of the Land of Israel as literature and then deals
with its three most important topics: the sages, Torah, and history. In his
engaging preface, Dr. Neusner invites his readers to think about the excitement
generated by the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947. He then compares
that significant discovery to the kind of reaction that would be inspired if a
document like the Yerushalmi were found in the same kind of hillside cave:
Consider in your mind's eye the sensation such a discovery - the sudden,
unanticipated discovery of the Yerushalmi - would cause,

ABOUT THE BOOK The Yanov Torah ANNOTATION Jews in a work camp in Yanov during
the Nazi occupation of L'vov, Poland, smuggle in a Torah, piece by piece,
despite enormous personal danger. FROM THE CRITICS Publishers Weekly Kahn's
drawings vivify events in a true account written by the Hermans in the words of
Dr. Emanuel Orlove (a pseudonym). Before emigrating with his family from Poland
in 1980, Orlove met his father and a fellow survivor of a Nazi work camp, Yanov,
who entrusted to the doctor the Yanov Torah. The sacred scroll had been smuggled
into the camp by brave Jews and zealously guarded after the prisoners were
released. Orlove promised to bring the Torah to America where it is taken from
temple to temple, signifying t'chiyas hamayseem, God's ability to bring the dead
to life: ``Millions of Jews have died but the Torah lives.'' (10up) School
Library Journal Gr 4 UpThe Yanov Torah is an intriguing and poignant tale from
the legacy of Holocaust ``miracles.'' It tells of the smuggling of a Torah into
a World War II German concentration camp in Russia and its eventual transfer to
a Russian Jew emigrating to America in 1980. An epilogue describes how it came
into the co-author's possession. Because of the format, the book appears to be
for upper elementary grade children. However, the story, and the story within a
story, both about adults, will not interest most children. Nor will the
unappealing cover and realistic but nonessential black-and-white illustrations.
To live as novelized nonfiction, this account also demands more skillful
storytelling. A well-intentioned book that lacks child appeal but that could
serve as a springboard for discussion and/or dramatization in libraries where
the demand for Judaica is great. Phillis Gershator, Dober Elementary Sch . , St.

From Publishers Weekly In a discursive style that is almost conversational at
times, O'Brien conveys his fascination with the origin and development of
political Zionism and the history of the State of Israel to the present day. The
book offers provocative food for thought to the general reader. O'Brien argues,
for instance, that the closing of America to mass immigration in 1924 was as
decisive an event in the history of Zionism and the prehistory of Israel as the
coming to power nine years later of Adolf Hitler. He discusses Gentile
impatience with "Holocaust consciousness" and its exploitation by certain
Israeli leaders, and how Israeli militancy has been regarded in some quarters as
"a monstrous mutation." He asserts that Arabs are not, and cannot be,
anti-Semitic: "They are anti-Zionist for good reasons." He compares the
Catholics of Northern Ireland with the Palestinian Arabs. As O'Brien, former
U.N. ambassador and member of the Irish parliament, notes, this is a highly
personal book. One is hard pressed to recall another which deals in depth with
this vast and prickly subject that is as bold or as readable. February Copyright

Hardcover Houghton Mifflin Company
From Publishers Weekly Lydia Hoffman, the vigorous narrator of Orlev's ( The
Man from the Other Side ) forceful and uncannily moving novel, describes herself
as a "terror." Sure enough, she bulldozes her way past a series of well-meaning
teachers and governesses and wreaks havoc at home, but Lydia, at 10, is not so
much ill-behaved as she is passionate. Like so many children she sees daily
developments (e.g., her father's growing absorption in another woman) in terms
of life and death, while actual life-and-death crises loom only hazily: it's
1943, and Lydia, who lives in Romania, is Jewish. With the fascists' sudden rise
to power, her father, a journalist, flees to Palestine, where he sends for "That
Woman" instead of his own family. Her resourceful mother arranges Lydia's
official transport to Palestine (and a perilous route for herself), but, however
safe, the kibbutz at the end of the journey provides no refuge from Lydia's
inner conflicts and sense of loss. Orlev portrays his turbulent heroine with the
greatest respect, introducing her as a figure whose choices are not equal to her
needs but who nonetheless refuses defeat. The author's judicious invocation of
historical events and his energetic emphasis on the characters' personal dramas
build to a riveting story in which every element seems freshly lived. Ages
10-14. Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc. From School Library
Journal Grade 4-7-Lydia, a typically self-centered and unusually spirited child
caught up in the dissolution of her personal and societal worlds, narrates her
story. Her parents separate, divorce, and ultimately remarry-both to people she
considers to be her enemies. World War II Romania becomes an increasingly
dangerous place for Jews, and Lydia's mother sends her to a kibbutz in Israel,
promising to follow soon. Adjustment to communal life is difficult for an
individualist like Lydia, and when her mother neither arrives nor writes, she
seeks out her father, already in Israel. Reluctantly, she comes to realize that
"That Woman" to whom he is now married is not really an adversary. When her
mother arrives married to the man Lydia had tried to get rid of, she is also
able to accept him. For slightly younger readers than, and neither as taut nor
as involving as, Orlev's The Island on Bird Street (1984) and The Man from the
Other Side (1991, both Houghton), this is an honest book peopled with convincing
characters whose petty jealousies and concerns occupy them more than the larger
events of the world in which they live. Lydia's experiences are often wryly
humorous; she is both inventive and unpredictable, and never boring. This offers
a contrast to the spate of Holocaust books with harrowing escapes and heroic
protagonists, but it may not have as much intrinsic appeal for young readers.

From Library Journal The authors have selected, according to their lights,
the 100 most important events and people in Jewish history from the patriarch
Abraham down to modern-day developments in the Middle East. Each of the 100
"nutshells" authoritatively describes in a concise, popular style some
significant event, personality, or concept that shaped Jewish history or
Judaism. Included, for example, are Moses; the Sinai revelation; David, Solomon,
and the great prophets; Peter, Paul, and Christianity; the Talmud; the Jewish
presence in Spain; Maimonides; emancipation; the birth of the State of Israel;
and so on. This book may be used in two ways. It can be read from cover to cover
as a popularly written history of the Jews and Judaism because the 100 nutshells
appear in chronological order. Or it can be read at random because each nutshell
is an independent, self-standing unit of information. On the whole, the authors'
choices are justified, but there are some serious omissions, e.g., the momentous
September 1993 Israeli-PLO peace accord. Nevertheless, this book is a unique,
ingenious way of presenting the essence of Jewish history and religion to
general readers who are reluctant to choose weightier volumes from the shelves.

From School Library Journal Grade 4-6-- The versatile entertainer's legendary
career that began when she was 5 years old and continued for 80 years is also
the story of the evolution of vaudeville, Yiddish theater, Broadway, radio,
motion pictures, and television. Perl recounts that as a young adult, Picon left
school to help support her impoverished family with her stage earnings. In the
background of Picon's story is a picture of the Jewish immigrants who fled the
pogroms of Russia and Eastern Europe to settle in the U. S. and flocked to the
Yiddish theater to escape the drudgery and poverty of their lives. Picon's warm,
cheery personality and her determination to succeed drive this biography. An
inspiration to talented young people of any generation. --Ruth Shire, Mount

From Publishers Weekly A founding editor of Ms. magazine here casts a wide

Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal Pogrebin, a founding editor of
Ms. magazine whose books on feminist thinking include How To Make It in a Man's
World ( LJ 4/1/70), here reconciles her Jewish background, which she rejected
for almost 20 years, with her feminist ideology. Scenes from her faith-observant
home are described poignantly. The break from observance came at the time
Pogrebin's mother died and she was not allowed by the patriarchal structure to
recite the kaddish , a prayer for the dead. She learns in time to embrace both
feminism and a reexamined Judaism, describing how she celebrates Jewish
holidays, and which rituals have special meaning to her as a woman. Chapters on
the secular sphere include a feminist perspective on Jewish and black women, the
treatment of women in Israel, Palestinians, and feminist attitudes toward South
Africa. This well-written, vigorous, and challenging look at Jewish traditions
and values from the worldview of a leading feminist thinker is recommended for
most libraries. - Molly Abramowitz, Silver Springs, Md. Copyright 1991 Reed

Hardcover Knopf
From Publishers Weekly In his first novel in five years, Potok brings back
the Hasidic artist hero of My Name Is Asher Lev . Now living in France, Asher is
deeply disturbed by the reviews of his latest show, which criticize his
paintings as facile self-imitation. When he learns of the death of his favorite
uncle, he returns to Brooklyn with his family for a funeral reunion with fellow
Ladover Hasids. In America, Asher is assailed by memories and surprises: his
uncle had amassed important artworks, and Asher is made responsible for the
collection. He also faces a crisis in his own work, and yet another dilemma when
he realizes that his son Avrumel has a chance to inherit the mantle of the
Ladover rabbi if the boy remains in Brooklyn under the the sect leader's special
tutelage. Asher understands that because the religious community looks upon his
art as the work of the devil, his professional survival depends on his remaining
geographically outside of the world in which he was raised. Potok again provides
an instructive look at the power of Hasidism, building dramatic tension in the
pull between the sacred and the profane. The plot is bogged down by too many
details of art techniques and wooden dialogue, however, and the story often
lumbers earnestly on the way to its by-no-means-foregone conclusion. 75,000

From School Library Journal When Asher Lev, an internationally famous painter,
returns from exile in France to his native Brooklyn to attend his uncle's
funeral, he begins a struggle with his own destiny. His son and daughter learn
to know their grandparents, and his wife develops a loving relationship with his
mother. But Asher knows he cannot remain in America, for his devotion to his
family and his religious beliefs are pitted against his artistic survival. Potok
is a master of words. His descriptive images of Jewish life and Lev's emotional
turmoil are to be savored. However, his frequent references to events in his
previous novels are often confusing and distracting. Any library containing
Potok's works needs his latest effort to complete the collection, but most YAs
will find this story too bland to hold their attention. --Katherine Fitch,

From Publishers Weekly Abraham Ha-Levi, a wealthy Los Angeles businessman, is
the sole heir to a 300-year-old Hasidic dynasty. Believing himself unworthy to
take on the mantle of leadership, he makes a solemn vow to God to continue the
distinguished lineage through his only child, Batsheva. When he marries her off
at 18 to a young Talmudic scholar, Isaac Harshen, they live in the ultra-fanatic

Batsheva struggles valiantly to be a true daughter of Israel, obedient to her
husband and the laws of Hasidic life. But her inquisitive nature and desire for
secular knowledge (her favorite books are Anna Karenina and Women in Love )
challenge Isaac's narrow view of her role as wife and mother. When his
abusiveness threatens their young son's wel
